Love the Great Outdoors? Northeast Georgia is for You!

The Northeast Georgia/Western North Carolina region is a part of the Blue Ridge Mountain chain and includes expansive areas of national forest land, which only adds to the extraordinary natural beauty of the area which is evident throughout each of the four seasons. You will find plenty to do in Northeast Georgia, including camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, zip-line/canopy tours, and of course visiting Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia!

Various water sports include rafting, boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and some of the best fly fishing east of the Mississippi in our many rivers and lakes, such as Lake Chatuge, Lake Nottely, Lake Winfield Scott, Lake Hiawassee, and Lake Blue Ridge. You'll also find some great whitewater rafting on the Toccoa and Ocoee Rivers, which are part of a single 93-mile long river that flows into McCaysville, Ga., and Copperhill, Tenn., a main tributary of the Hiawassee River. In addition, there are numerous waterfalls to explore whether you find them by driving, hiking, or maybe even on horseback.

Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina provide some excellent backpacking and camping adventures for those who love the outdoors.  For the more adventurous, how about a 2,160 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail (called the 'AT' by hikers), which runs from Springer Mountain in Fannin County (Blue Ridge) Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Many hikers elect to hike just portions of the AT, as this trail generally takes six months to complete. The 'AT' follows the eastern ridge of the Appalachian Mountains, passing through 14 states with most of the hikers starting in Georgia due to the mild climate.

Athens is home to the University of Georgia, which is Georgia's flagship university. A vibrant community with a thriving music scene, Athens is just over an hour drive (70 miles) from Atlanta and is home to a collection of unique shops, great restaurants, an expansive botanical garden and antebellum architecture. Athens frequently shows up on national lists as a great destination and a preferred place to live. Every day is a great day to be a resident in "The Classic City!"
